Acoustic Guitar Lesson...

This article is designed to guide you in what to look for when learning how to play the acoustic guitar. Within an acoustic guitar lesson, there are several things that should be covered right away and being new to the instrument, we're going to give you just a few things that should be covered within the first couple of sessions.Acoustic Guitar Lesson

You need to learn the parts of the guitar, first and foremost. It helps to know what the guitar is made up of, so when you go to buy your own acoustic guitar, you'll know what to look for. The parts of the guitar are:
1.       Headstock
2.       Tuning keys
3.       Nut
4.       Neck
5.       Frets
6.       Neck joint
7.       Body
8.       Sound hole
9.       Bridge

The strings are one thing that you will know right off the bat. There are six of them with a standard tuning of E, A, D, G, B and E, from thickest to thinnest. It is important to know those notes as you learn to read music.

It's Time To Start Your Lessons Today!

The right hand is the picking hand. You should also learn the proper way to hold the guitar pick within that first lesson. There is a very specific way to hold the guitar pick that affects the style of acoustic guitar you want to play.

The left hand is the fretting hand and wraps around the neck with the palm at the back of the neck and the fingers over the strings. Be sure to learn how to arch the wrist and bridge the fingers to avoid muting strings. This will become easier with practice.

Now we come to the good stuff; actually making music. I highly suggest that you learn to read music. Then you will be able to translate the written notation to the neck of the guitar. It is absolutely vital to learn the notes on the strings. Start with the fifth and sixth strings and work upwards. Learning these notes as part of an acoustic guitar lesson is important so you can get a handle on how to play power chords.

Like we just said, the next imporant thing you should learn are guitar chords. Chords are comprised of three or more notes played together and sound harmonic together. This is where you can also start to learn a little theory. Theory will help you to build chord anywhere on the neck.

One type of chord is the barre chord. A barre chord is formed by placing your left index finger across all six strings and the other fingers on frets to form a chord. This is very popular in many types of music and can be used as a skill to play anywhere on the neck at any time.

Another type of chord is the power chord which is a two note chord that is made up of the root note plus the fifth of the major scale. See? I told you that learning theory was important! The root is the note that the chord is named after and a fifth is simply four notes above it in the scale.

A good acoustic guitar lesson plan will also include the learning of scales. Scales are the building block of everything else you will learn, so make it a point to learn as many scales as you can.
